Saludos!

Title
Diversity and spatial distribution of Navicula sp. and Pinnularia sp. in the pond of the forest of the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao
Abstract
In the forest of the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao there is a pond of approximately 77.17meters in diameter and a mean depth of 0.4 meters. This pond has a heterogeneous population of microalgae, in which the most frequently found algae are the ones of the genres: Navicula and Pinnularia. In 2006, we began studies of diversity that have let us established the different populations allocated there. The technique we used in our laboratory for the characterization of microalgae was light microscopy of in-vivo samples taken and analyzed periodically. While determining the pond’s composition we compared the samples with images found on the literature and different data bases. The study of the population dynamics of the pond was focused on the presence of Navicula sp. and Pinnularia sp. due to the relative abundance of them. We have observed correlations between the population dynamics of these microalgae and the volume and other abiotic factors affecting the pond.
